Keyword Searching Basics
Boolean/Logical Operators AND, OR, and NOT
AND narrows your search by connecting concepts. The citations retrieved will contain all of your concepts.
EXAMPLE: nuclear and waste and disposal retrieves only the records containing all three terms.
OR broadens your search by connecting synonyms. The records retrieved will contain at least one of your synonyms.
EXAMPLE: nuclear or radioactive retrieves all records containing nuclear as well as all records containing radioactive
NOT excludes a concept from your search.
EXAMPLE: disposal not water retrieves all records containing disposal that DO NOT contain water
Nesting
Enclose search phrases in parentheses, a process called nesting, when using more than one Boolean operator in a search statement.
EXAMPLES: (nuclear or radioactive) and waste and disposal
((nuclear or radioactive) and waste and disposal) not water
Proximity/Positional/Adjacency Operators
Proximity operators specify where search terms are located in relation to each other in a record.
They might require that search terms be
adjacent to each other in the order specified,
EXAMPLES: w (with) or adj (adjacent)
waste w disposal retrieves records containing the phrase waste disposal
adjacent to each other in either order,
EXAMPLE: n (near)
waste n disposal retrieves records containing the phrase waste disposal or disposal of waste
[Note: Words like a, an, the, of, etc. are normally stopwords and are ignored.]
within a specified number of words of each other
EXAMPLE: n2 (within two words of each other in either order)
waste n2 disposal retrieves records containing both waste disposal and disposal of hazardous radioactive waste.
Normally, proximity operators cannot be used with nested expressions. For example, searching (nuclear or radioactive) w waste wont work; instead, use nuclear w waste or radioactive w waste.
Truncation/Wildcards
Truncation symbols or wildcards allow the researcher to substitute a symbol for a character or characters in a word in order to retrieve various forms of the word, thus broadening the search. The symbols used will vary from one system to another. As an example, heres one of the symbols used by Thompson/Gale databases; consult the systems Online Help for more details.
* multiple character
EXAMPLE: dispos* retrieves dispose, disposed, disposing, disposal, etc.
For tips on applying these search techniques to specific databases, select Tutorials on the Librarys website, then Database Keyword Search Tips, or consult the online Help offered by each database.
Electronic Journals at JRVP
JRVP subscribes to a number of journals which provide
electronic versions of their publications online, found under E-Journals

many of the Library's licensed databases (see page 3) contain journal articles
in full text. If you're viewing an
article citation from a database and see the Husky Fetch symbol
, click on it to view options for
locating the article.

To search for a periodical title, click on the Journal Title button, then type the title of the periodical in the box provided. A Journal Title search may result in a list of several records for the same title; you may need to view more than one of these to find the issue date youre seeking.
To find the full title of a journal from an abbreviation, consult Periodical Title Abbreviations: By Abbreviation, available at the Reference Desk (Z 6945 .A2 W34 2007 REF DESK), or this web site: http://www.public.iastate.edu/~CYBERSTACKS/JAS.htm
When searching for more complex titles such as conference proceedings, a Keyword Search is usually effective. Click on the Keyword Search button, then enter several of the most unique keywords from the conference title, then select all of these from the pull-down menu on the right.
