Chemical Abstracts

Chemical Abstracts (CA) provides indexing and abstracting of the literature of chemistry worldwide from 1907 to the present. It contains indexes by Author, Subject, Chemical Substance, Formula, and Patent Number. CA has always defined chemistry as broadly as possible and includes the chemical aspects of:

 

Agriculture	Economics	Materials
Astronomy	Education	Metallurgy
Archaeology	Engineering	Mathematics
Biology	Geoscience	Medicine
Biotechnology	History	Physics

 

The JRVP Library offers two options for searching Chemical Abstracts:

 

Chemical Abstracts in print   Coverage: Indexes the chemical literature from 1907 to the present by Author, Subject, Chemical Substance, Chemical Formula, and Patent Number.   Location: Indexes & Abstracts area on the south side of the main floor. Call number QD 1 .A53ca INDEXES.

SciFinder Scholar*   Coverage: Indexes the chemical literature from 1907 to the present and chemical substance information from 1957 to the present. Also includes reaction, supplier, and regulatory information from other Chemical Abstracts Service databases, and MEDLINE from 1958 to the present.   Location: from the Librarys home page click on E- Resources and select Search for an E-Resource. Type SciFinder Scholar into the box and click search. Connect to SciFinder Scholar by clicking on its title from the search results.

Chemical Substance Synthesis Search in SciFinder Scholar

• Click on the Database button and deselect Medline. Click OK.
• Click on the Locate button.
• Under the heading Locate Substances, click on the Substance Identifier button.
• Enter your compound name and click OK.
• Verify that youve found the correct substance.
• Click on the Get References button.
• In the Get Reference window, select References Associated with, then Preparation, then click OK.
• Since youre looking for the first synthesis, scroll down to the bottom of the references list to view the oldest references. (Note: avoid using theses, dissertations and review articles.)
• To view the full entry of a reference, including an abstract, click on the microscope icon.
• To start a new search, click on New Task.
• When finished with your search, be sure to select Exit SciFinder Scholar from the File menu.
