To find what books, journals and government publications that the Van Pelt Library owns and where they are located, use the JRVP Library Catalog. When you enter the catalog, a Basic search screen appears.
To search for a periodical title, click on the Journal Title button, then type the title of the periodical in the box provided. A Journal Title search may result in a list of several records for the same title; you may need to view more than one of these to find the issue date youre seeking.
To find the full title of a journal from an abbreviation, consult Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index (CASSI), located near Chemical Abstracts in the Indexes & Abstracts area on the 2nd floor (QD 1 .A52 INDEXES), or Periodical Title Abbreviations: By Abbreviation, available at the Reference Desk (PN 4832 .P47 REF DESK), or this web site: http://www.public.iastate.edu/~CYBERSTACKS/JAS.htm
When searching for more complex titles such as conference proceedings, a Keyword Boolean search is usually effective. Click on the Keyword Boolean button, then enter several of the most unique keywords from the conference title, then select all of these from the pull-down menu on the right.

Locating Books & Periodicals
Books and other materials available for check-out are shelved by LCCS call number on the 3rd floor in the main collection.
Periodicals in print or microformat are shelved by Library of Congress call number in these locations:
CURRENT JOURNALS (1st Floor): Recent issues kept here until bound or reissued in microfilm/fiche.
SERIALS COLLECTION (Garden Level): Older volumes in print format.
MICROFICHE & MICROFILM AREA (2nd Floor, west): Older volumes on microfiche or microfilm.
Electronic Journals can be found under E-Journals
on the Librarys web page. In addition,
many of the Library's licensed databases contain journal articles in full
text. If you're viewing an article
citation from a database and see the Husky Fetch symbol
, click on it to view options for
locating the article.
The reference collection contains dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, directories, standards, codes, catalogs, etc., shelved by Library of Congress Classification System call number. Here are some examples:
CRC Handbook of Chemistry & Physics QD 65 .C5 REF
Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology TP 9 .E561 REF (Also online under Databases)
Perrys Chemical Engineers Handbook TP 151 .P5 REF
Encyclopedia of Chemical Processing and Design (McKetta) TP 9 .E66 REF
Ullmanns Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry TP 9 .U57 2003 REF
Encyclopedia of Polymer Science & Technology TP 1110 .E53 2003 REF
ENGnetBASE (Handbook of engineering data) - Select Databases on the Library's web page.
Compiles a wide range of information previously published in CRC engineering handbooks. The online database will be updated continually, and its coverage will be expanded. Current coverage includes general, structural, electrical, mechanical, civil, environmental, remediation, and optomechanical engineering.
Indexes & Abstracts - Print - 2nd Floor
To help researchers find references to articles in older journals, conference proceedings, and other publications, a collection of periodical indexes and abstracting services is available near the north entrance to the second floor. To access articles in recent publications, refer to "Indexes & Abstracts - Databases" below.
Indexes & Abstracts - Databases
To find citations to articles from journals, conference proceedings, and other publications, go to the Librarys website and select Databases. The resulting screen offers four search options for finding databases:
(1) "Search for Databases" to search database titles and/or descriptions,
(2) "Databases A-Z" to browse an alphabetical list by title,
(3) "Search by Subject Headings" to view databases grouped by subject, and
(4) "Search by Providers" to view databases grouped by publisher/provider.
Here are some recommended databases:
ABI/Inform (ProQuest)
Covers nearly every aspect of business, including company histories and new product development. Citations include abstracts and indexes of significant articles from current business and management periodicals. Includes some full text.
Applied Science & Technology Abstracts (ASTA) FirstSearch (1983-present)
Indexes and abstracts articles in every area of science, engineering, and technology from trade and industrial publications, journals issued by professional and technical societies, and specialized subject periodicals.
Beilstein contains data on organic compound structures and substructures. Gmelin contains structure and factual data relating to inorganic and organometallic chemistry.
Chemical Abstracts through SciFinder Scholar (1967 to the present for substance information, 1907 to the present for bibliographic information)
The JRVP Library is licensed to provide SciFinder Scholar to one user at a time, so if you try to access it and it's not available, wait a few minutes and try again. The Chemical Abstracts Service web page provides an overview of SciFinder Scholar at http://www.cas.org/SCIFINDER/SCHOLAR/resources.html.
Indexes publications in all engineering disciplines, applied physics, electronics, materials science and related fields in science and management worldwide back to 1970. Also provides access to engineering web-site abstracts, patents, engineering handbooks and more.
Corrosion Abstracts CSA Illumina (1980-present)
International coverage of general corrosion, testing, corrosion characteristics, preventive measures, materials construction and performance, and equipment for many industries.
Current Research @ Michigan Technological University (ProQuest)
A searchable full text database of dissertations submitted by Michigan Tech to UMIs Dissertation database. Full-text PDF files are available for most dissertations from 1968. Also includes some theses. In ProQuest, select Interdisciplinary Dissertations & Theses to search this database.
Engineered Materials Abstracts - CSA Illumina (1986-present)
Includes Composites, Advanced Polymers, and Ceramics subfiles.
Forest Science Database (1939-present)
A comprehensive guide to international forestry literature covering the development, production, utilization, improvement, ecology and management of the earth's forests. Provides bibliographic citations and abstracts published in Forestry Abstracts, Forest Product Abstracts and Agroforestry Abstracts from their respective beginnings.
METADEX CSA Illumina (1966-present)
Comprehensive source for information on metals and alloys: their properties, manufacturing, applications, and development.
NTIS (National Technical Information Service) CSA Illumina (1964-present)
Provides citations to information in a wide variety of
subject areas resulting from research sponsored by the
Web of Science (1973-present)
Offers access to ISI Citation Indexes (Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index and Arts and Humanities Citation Index). Citation indexes allow researchers to take an older paper they know is useful/relevant and find who cited it in more recent papers. JRVP Library is licensed to provide this database to a maximum of three users at one time.
