Locating Books & Periodicals

Most library collections are arranged by subject using the Library of Congress Classification System (LCCS) call numbers. Here are some examples:

Q General Science

T Technology

QD Chemistry

TP Chemical Engineering & Technology

Books are located on the Third Floor in the Main Collection.

Periodicals are shelvedin these locations:

CURRENT JOURNALS (1st Floor): Recent issues kept here until bound or reissued in microfilm/fiche.

SERIALS COLLECTION (Garden Level): Bound periodicals.

MICROFORMS AREA (2nd Floor ): Microfilm & Microfiche cabinets located on west side of 2nd floor.

Electronic journals are found under E-Journals on the Librarys web page. To determine whether or not the library owns a particular periodical, checking both the JRVP Online Catalog and E-Journals is recommended.

Reference Collection - 2nd Floor

Use to collect background information on an issue or start your research.

Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology TP 9 .E56 REF and online

Index includes entries for specific compounds.

Encyclopedia of Microbiology QR 9 .E53 1992 REF

Encyclopedia of Chemical Processing & Design TP 9 .E66 REF

Knovel Interactive Library: Introductory Package - Combines essential and authoritative reference books and databases from more than 30 science and technology publishers and professional societies, including complete access to Chemical Properties Handbook, Lange's Handbook of Chemistry, Perry's Chemical Engineering Handbook, and much more.

ThomasNet - Industrial search engine that provides one source for finding the exact products, services, or suppliers. Also gives buyers direct access to the detailed information they need to make a purchasing or specifying decisions, including line-item product details, CAD drawings, and more.

JRVP Online Catalog- Use to find what books, journals and government publications that the Van Pelt Library owns and where they are located. When you enter the catalog, a Basic search screen appears.

To search for a periodical, search by Journal Title for the periodical title (sometimes called "Source"), rather than by article title or author. A Journal Title search may result in a list of several records for the same title; you may need to view more than one of these to find the issue date youre seeking. The HuskyFetch link on the journal record leads to electronic access to the journal, if available. When searching for more complex titles such as conference proceedings, a keyword search is recommended. Click on the Keyword Search button, then enter several of the most unique keywords from the conference title, then select all of these from the pull-down menu on the right.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) To request books and articles not available here from other libraries, complete the appropriate New Request form, available by selecting Interlibrary Loan on the Library's website and logging into ILLiad (Inter-Library Loan Internet Accessible Database). When using ILLiad for the first time, click on First Time Users to set up your account; youll need your MTU User ID and Password. ILL requests may also be made directly through most research databases such as WorldCat, CSA Metadex, and Compendex. Follow the HuskyFetch menu options and select "Get Item from another Library via ILLiad." Please be sure to check the JRVP Library holdings before submitting a request directly from a database.
