Chemistry

SciFinder Scholar (Chemical Abstracts): (1967-current for substance information, 1907-current for bibliographic information. Includes three major databases from CAS: CAplus, CA Registry, and CA reactions. Information about commercial suppliers of chemicals is also available. The JRVP Library is licensed to provide SciFinder Scholar to one user at a time, so if you try to access it and it's not available, just wait a few minutes and try again.

 

If youd like to see an example of the steps involved in searching for papers that describe the synthesis of succinic acid, you can look at a demonstration slideshow here (.PPT) or here (.PDF). To limit the example, the search has been further narrowed to biotransformation reactions involving glycerol.

 

Chemical Abstracts - Print volumes, 1907-current - QD 1 .A53ca INDEXES

Efficient searches can be done by first consulting the Chemical Abstracts index

volumes for Registry Numbers (CAS RN's). This index provides formal Chemical

Abstracts substance names for their corresponding CAS RN's. Then consult the

Chemical Abstracts Substance Index volumes. Use the CA formal substance name

already obtained from the CAS RN index.

 

Beilstein & Gmelin CrossFire (1772 - )

Efficient searches can be done with Beilstein Registry numbers as reaction products. e.g. rx.pbrn=4359913

US patents are primarily covered. Provides both bibliographic and full-text searching.

Google Patents

The search options are not as powerful as those at the US Patent Office, but its easy to use, and doesnt require a plug-in to display patent images.

compiles a wide range of information in engineering handbooks published by CRC.

Knovel Interactive Library: Introductory Package

combines essential and authoritative reference books and databases from more than 30 Sci-Tech publishers and professional societies including, McGraw Hill, John Wiley, Elsevier, Springer, Industrial Press, American Institute of Chemical Engineers and American Society of Mechanical Engineers. It includes complete access to Chemical Properties Handbook, Handbook of Electrical Engineers, Lange's Handbook of Chemistry, Machinery's Handbook, Perry's Chemical Engineering Handbook, and much more.

 

 

Government Documents

 

The Librarys catalog includes records for most of the paper and microfiche government documents held by the Library.

 

Online government documents can be searched with USAsearch.gov

 

Technical reports can be an important source of information for plant design projects. The major source for indexing and abstracting technical reports is NTIS (National Technical Information Service). The library has many NASA and DOE technical reports on microfiche. Many are also available online at the NTIS/GPO DARTS database. DARTS is an experimental project, and is currently available in the library only. The password can be entered by a librarian at the reference desk. The Department of Energy (DOE) also has many technical reports online. The DOE Energy Citations Database goes back to 1948, and the DOE Information Bridge has the full text of many reports published since 1995.
