Reference Collection - 2nd Floor Use to collect background information on an issue or start your research. The collection is arranged by subject using the Library of Congress Classification System (LCCS) call numbers.

JRVP Online Catalog The JRVP Online Catalog contains records of materials owned by the MTU Library, including books, periodicals, videos, CDs, maps, government publications, and microformat materials. Two search interfaces, Basic and Keyword, allow the user to search for items by author, title, subject, call number, ISBN/ISSN, or keyword.. Use the Location, Status, and Call Number information to find an item in the Library collections. To search for a periodical, search by Journal Title for the periodical title (sometimes called "Source"), rather than by article title or author.

 

Locating Books & Periodicals

Books are located on the Third Floor in the Main Collection, shelved by Library of Congress call number.

Periodicals in are shelved by Library of Congress call number in these locations:

CURRENT JOURNALS (1st Floor): Recent issues kept here until bound or reissued in microfilm/fiche.

SERIALS COLLECTION (Garden Level): Older volumes in print format.

MICROFICHE & MICROFILM AREA (2nd Floor, west): Older volumes on microfiche or microfilm.

Electronic journals are found under E-Journals on the Librarys web page.

To determine whether or not the library owns a particular periodical, checking both the JRVP Online Catalog and E-Journals is recommended.

 

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) To request material not available at the J. Robert Van Pelt Library

To request books and articles from other libraries, complete the appropriate New Request form, available by selecting Interlibrary Loan on the Library's website and logging into ILLiad (Inter-Library Loan Internet Accessible Database). When using ILLiad for the first time, click on First Time Users to set up your account; youll need your MTU User ID and Password as well as your M number.

Databases (Periodical & Newspaper Indexes)

To find citations to articles from journals, conference proceedings, and other publications, go to the Librarys website and select Databases. For tips on using techniques such as truncation and Boolean & proximity operators in various databases, select Tutorials on the Library's website, then Database Keyword Search Tips. Individual databases also have online help available.

 

Many databases include some articles in full text. If you're viewing an article citation from a database and see the Husky Fetch symbol , click on it for options for locating the article. Most of these databases may be accessed by MTU students/faculty/staff from off-campus by entering your ISO/Husky Mail user ID and password.

ABI/Inform Covers a wide range of business and management topics. Some full text included.

 

CSA Illumina - A comprehensive science-related set of databases with coverage including biological sciences, biotechnology, genetics, mechanical engineering, medicine & health, psychology, sociology, and many others.

 

FirstSearch - Databases marked with ( * ) allow a Reviewed Journal Phrase field search for peer-reviewed journal.

*Applied Science & Technology Abstracts (ASTA)Covers every area of science, engineering and technology.

Article 1st - Contains citations for items listed on the table of contents pages of over 12,600 journals in all subject areas.

*Biological & Agricultural Index - Indexes key periodicals in the life sciences and agriculture.

*Education Abstracts- Encompasses all areas of educators, including administration, teaching methods and curriculum.

*Humanities Abstracts - Covers English language periodicals in all areas of the humanities.

Medline - National Library of Medicine's comprehensive database covering all areas of medicine.

*Social Science Abstracts - Covers periodicals in anthropology, economics, ethics, geography, law and criminology, political science, social work, sociology, and international relations.

PsycFirst - Most recent three years of the PsycINFO database covering worldwide research in psychology and related fields. Contains citations and abstracts from all types of publications.

Readers Guide Abstracts Indexes/abstracts popular periodicals from the US and Canada for a wide variety of subjects.

*Wilson Business Abstracts - Complete and accurate indexing and abstracting of 345 leading business magazines.

*WilsonSelectPlus Full text articles from periodicals in social sciences, humanities, business, education and science.

WorldCat Worldwide library catalog with over 52 million bibliographic records, including library holdings information, for all types of material cataloged by OCLC member libraries. This does NOT index periodicals at the article level.

 

JSTOR- Back issues of over 200 scholarly journals dated from with 2-5 years including Biological Sciences, Business, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Education, Law, Political Science, Psychology, Public Policy & Administration, Sociology, and more.

 

Lexis-Nexis Academic Wide range of news, business, legal, medical, and current affairs information in full text.

Lexis-Nexis Congressional - Congressional hearings, public issues, legislation, history, and legal research.

 

Thompson Gale - Allows researcher to limit searches to "peer-reviewed publications".

Academic OneFile - Indexes peer-reviewed, full-text articles from the world's leading journals and reference sources in the physical sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences, the arts, theology, literature and other subjects.

Computer Database - Computer-related product introductions, news and reviews in areas such as hardware, software, electronics, engineering, communications and the application of technology.

Expanded Academic ASAP Scholarly and popular research on a variety of academic subjects. Includes full text.

General OneFile - News and periodical articles on business, current events, economics, education, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature and art, politics, science, social science, sports, technology, and many more.

Health Reference Center Academic Consumer health and allied health research. Includes full text.

InfoTrac Custom Newspapers - Collection of newspapers from around the country and the world.
