Browsing and Search Terms

 

Not everyone uses the same word to describe the same thing. Examples are cars verses automobiles, or PC verses personal computer. When searching for information on your topic it is important to keep this in mind and try different search terms when you do not get the results you want. Here are some examples of terms you may want to use when searching for Gender:

Reference Resources:

 

The reference collection is a good place to begin exploring an unfamiliar subject. The resources found here can give you definitions of new terms and back ground information on your subject, along with help identifying specific issues within your broad subject area to explore in more detail.

 

50 Key Concepts in Gender Studies

Each of the 50 key concepts begins with a definition, includes illustrations of how the concept has been applied within the field, offers examples which allow a critical re-evaluation of the concept, is cross-reference with the other key concepts as well as makes further reading suggestions.

 

Completely Queer: The Gay and Lesbian Encyclopedia

Unique features of the volume include a list of famous pseudonyms, gay and lesbian detectives, and literary awards. References to related entries, sources for further study, and a 75-page chronology from c.12,000 B.C.E. to November 1996.

Encyclopedia of Applied Ethics

Each article begins with an outline of its topics, a glossary of especially important terms, and a first paragraph summarizing the content of the article.

 

Encyclopedia of Bioethics

QH 332 .E52 2004 REF

The alphabetical entries address a wide range of topics that raise difficult and important questions. Abortion, genetic screening, female genital mutilation, the right to die, health issues of immigration, and corporate responsibility are but a few. The contributors discuss the issues from many points of view. The abortion article includes sections covering medical perspectives, contemporary ethical and legal aspects, and Jewish, Catholic, Protestant, and Islamic religious perspectives. There are also articles about bioethics in Buddhism, eugenics, health policy, women as health-care professionals, whistle blowing in health care, and veterinary ethics. All of the articles are signed, and all have bibliographies.

 

Encyclopedia of Homosexuality

Coverage includes historical, medical, psychological, sociological, and transcultural and transgeographical information in biographical, topical, and thematic entries. A subject cross-reference guide begins the work.

 

Encyclopedia of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender History in America

HQ 76.3 .U5 E53 2004

This collection of articles covers GLBT history from colonel times through the landmark 2003 case of Lawrence & Garner v. Texas Supreme Court case. Articles are signed and followed by a bibliography and list of cross-references.

International Encyclopedia of Women

Following the cross-references, each article or major section includes a list of "References and Further Readings." These bibliographies, generally from four to ten works in length, are comprised of print works for the most part, though some entries do list Web sites. Each volume begins with an alphabetical listing of articles.

E Resources

 

Access to electronic indexes/abstracts, online books, e-journals and selected websites are available through the library website at http://www.lib.mtu.edu/ listed under e-resources.

 

JRVP Online Catalog

Contains records of materials owned by the MTU Library, including books, periodicals, videos, CDs, maps, government publications, and microformat materials. Two search interfaces, Basic and Keyword, allow the user to search for items by author, title, subject, call number, ISBN/ISSN, or keyword(s). Use the Location, Status, and Call Number information to find an item in the Library collections. To search for a periodical article, search by Journal Title for the title of the periodical (sometimes called the "Source"), rather than searching by article title or author.

Scholarly and popular research on a variety of academic subjects includes full text articles.

 

Humanities Abstracts

Covers English language periodicals in all areas of the humanities.

 

Lexis-Nexis Academic

Provides access to a wide range of news, business, legal, and reference information. List of titles, fact book, how to search (tutorials) and more information available.

 

PsycARTICLES

A database of full-text articles from journals published by the American Psychological Association, the APA Educational Publishing Foundation, the Canadian Psychological Association, and Hogrefe & Huber. The database includes all material from the print journals with the exception of advertisements and editorial board lists.

 

Social Science Abstracts

Covers periodicals in anthropology, economics, ethics, geography, law and criminology, political science, social work, sociology, and international relations.

 

 

E-Journals
