Locating Books & Periodicals

Books are located on the Third Floor in the Main Collection, shelved by LSSC call number.

Periodicals are shelved by LSSC call number in these locations:

CURRENT JOURNALS (1st Floor): Recent issues kept here until bound or reissued in microfilm/fiche.

SERIALS COLLECTION (Garden Level): Bound periodicals.

MICROFORMS AREA (2nd Floor): Microfilm & Microfiche cabinets located on west side of 2nd floor.

E-Journals: To find periodicals available in electronic format, select E-Journals on the Librarys website.

JRVP Online Catalog - Use to find out what materials the JRVP Library owns and where it is located. Use the Location, Status, and Call Number information to find an item in the Library collections. To search for a periodical article, search by Journal Title for the title of the periodical (sometimes called the "Source"), rather than searching by article title or author.

Databases (Periodical & Newspaper Indexes)

To find articles from periodicals, newspapers and other publications, select Databases. The resulting screen offers four options for finding databases. Many databases include some articles in full text. If you're viewing a citation and see the HuskyFetch or GoFetch symbol, click on it for options for locating the article. Here are some recommended databases:

 

         Thompson/Gale - A collection of about 20 databases, including these:

Academic OneFile: Indexes peer-reviewed, full-text articles from the world's leading journals and reference sources in the physical sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences, the arts, theology, literature and other subjects.

Expanded Academic ASAP Scholarly and popular research on a variety of academic subjects. Includes full text.

General Reference Center Gold Use to find articles from newspapers, reference books, and periodicals on current events, popular culture, business and industry coverage, the arts and sciences, sports, hobbies, and more.

Health Reference Center Academic - Articles on Fitness, Pregnancy, Medicine, Nutrition, Diseases, Public Health, Occupational Health and Safety, Alcohol and Drug abuse, HMOs, Prescription Drugs, etc. The material contained in this database is intended for informational purposes only.

InfoTrac OneFile - Business, computers, current events, economics, education, environmental issues, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature and art, politics, science, social science, sports, technology, and many general interest topics.

 

         FirstSearch Collection of about 50 databases.

WilsonSelectPlus includes full text articles from over 1400 periodicals covering research in the Social Sciences, Humanities, Business, Education and General Sciences. To find other databases, click the Databases tab to view a database list with descriptions, or to access buttons to List Databases by Subject or Suggest Best Databases.

Article 1st - contains citations for items listed on the table of contents pages of over 12,600 journals in all subject areas.

Applied Science & Technology Abstracts (ASTA) - Covers professional, trade, and industrial and specialized subject periodicals in every area of science, engineering and technology.

Education Abstracts- encompasses all areas of educators, including administration, teaching methods and curriculum.

General Science Abstracts - General science literature from the U.S. and Europe.

Humanities Abstracts - covers English language periodicals in all areas of the humanities, including ethics.

Newspaper Abstracts - Indexes and abstracts U.S. and regional newspapers, including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, and USA Today. The Wall Street Journal (Eastern edition) is indexed beginning Jan 1, 1990.

Readers Guide Abstracts Abstracts of articles from popular magazines.

Social Sciences Abstracts - Covers periodicals in anthropology, economics, ethics, geography, law and criminology, political science, social work, sociology, and international relations.

Wilson Business Abstracts - Provides complete and accurate indexing and abstracting of 345 leading business magazines.

 

         LexisNexis Academic Collection of databases in business, law, medicine, and current affairs. Click on the Guided News Search tab, then select either General News or Business News as a News Category.

 

         CQ Researcher - Comprehensive reporting & analysis on issues in the news. Noted for its in-depth, unbiased coverage of health, social trends, criminal justice, international affairs, education, the environment, technology, and the economy.

 

Accessing MeL (Michigan Electronic Library) For databases that you can search at home, go to www.mel.org and select "MeL Databases" or "MeL Advanced Search". Youll need to enter your Michigan driver's license number or State ID.
