Window to the Copper Country
This work was commissioned in the summer of 1988 for the Reading Room of the MTU Archives and Copper Country Historical Collections to honor the depth and breadth of local resource materials. The center portion of the window is a map of the region with the major communities designated by White Pine copper nuggets and half breeds (silver and copper). In addition, other locations are marked with local specimens of an agate and a greenstone. The smaller border panels symbolize the rich natural and historical resources of the Copper Country. Found within them are further examples of local minerals and artifacts. The artist, Peg McNinch, is a resident of the Copper Country and lives in a 100 year old cabin with her husband and two children. She was introduced to the medium of glass ten years ago beginning with small suncatchers moving to lamps and now creating windows. She was recently judged Best of Show at the Copper Country Community Arts Council spring exhibition. At 5 1/2 feet by 6 1/2 feet the Window to the Copper Country is now the largest piece that she has created.
