Scope and Content Note:
The First Congregational Church of Hancock was founded June 4, 1862,
with services in their first church building held on January 4, 1863. The First
Presbyterian Church of Houghton was founded in 1903. These two churches
formed the Portage Lake United Church of Houghton through a merger in 1969 and
operated from the former First Presbyterian Church on Houghton?s College
Avenue. In 1973, this church building was demolished due to highway
improvements. The united church moved its congregation to a new church building
near the campus of Michigan Technological University in 1976.
The documents in the collection contain information about the principles of each
congregation, committee minutes, financial reports, membership records,
photographs, and church correspondence and other records.
This manuscript collection combines material from two separate accessions.
Joanne MacInnes delivered an initial deposit of material in November 1988 (Acc.
#396) and Jerry MacInnes delivered another deposit in September 2006 (Acc.
#06-023A).
The Portage Lake United Church collection was processed by Jonathan Ehlers, a
student employee of the Michigan Tech Archives, during the Fall 2006 and Spring 2007
semesters. Erik Nordberg created the finding aid for the Portage Lake
United Church Collection, MS-054.
