Indexes for Government Publications

Monthly Catalog of Government Information
Comprehensive source for U.S. Government Information. Includes all documents issued to Depository Libraries as well as many non-depository titles. The paper version of the Monthly Catalog (1896-1995) is currently housed in an off site storage facility and can be retrieved for use within the Library by request. Several web sites also provide current online access to this resource.

CIS Serial Set Index
Indexes more than 325,000 documents produced for or by the U.S. Congress between 1789 and 1969. The Serial Set Index, including the Index and Cartobibliography of Maps, is shelved in the Documents Department Index Area.

Congressional Universe
Online service providing access to the CIS Index (Congressional publications since 1970) including legislative histories, full text of the CFR, U.S. Code, many Congressional bills, reports, and hearings, and related materials.

Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe
Full text access to U.S. and State legal information including constitutions, laws, and court cases.

Guide to U.S.G.S. Publications
Indexes U.S.G.S. bulletins, professional papers, and thematic maps including geophysical investigations, miscellaneous field studies, mineral investigations resources, oil and gas investigations, and geologic and hydrologic maps. The most current issue of this index is shelved in the reference desk area.

Government Reports Index (GRI)
Indexes scientific and technical reports, business information, and other data, produced by U.S. government agencies, international government organizations, and government contractors, available for sale by NTIS. Paper volumes for 1951-1964 available in the Index Area (2nd Floor). .

NTIS Technical Reports Database
Successor to the GRI. Indexed documents may be purchased online.

NTIS/GPO DARTS (Depository Access to Reports, Technical and Scientific)
A selection of NTIS, DOE, NASA and DTIC reports in full-text PDF format. Approximately 240,000 reports currently available, with plans to add more. Dates of reports fall between 1997-2000. Must be used in the library. Ask at the Reference desk for help in accessing this reports collection.

Other Indexes
Many Government Agencies produce publications indexes. The library receives some of these indexes through the Depository Library Program, others may be accessed via the agencies? web pages. Links to selected agencies are provided on the U.S. Government Information on the Internet Web Page.

Government Documents are indexed in a number of commercial of indexes including PAIS, Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature, Expanded Academic Index, and Reference Center Gold. They also are included in many subject or discipline specific indexes -- Applied Sciences Index, ERIC, GEOREF, Medline, and Social Sciences Abstracts, etc. Links to many of these indexes are provided on the Library's Database Web Page.
