Google Scholar Hints
Launched
in November 2004, Google Scholar is the beta version of web search engine
designed especially for scholarly literature, including peer-reviewed papers,
theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports. Google
Scholar searches a subset of scholarly literature in a wide range of
fields. Unfortunately Google Scholar has not provided a complete list of
which publishers or other sources are included, nor which titles and dates
are available. If a publisher, library or archive does not have an
agreement with Google Scholar to make its publications searchable, its
contents may not appear in the search results. Keep in mind that the JRVP
Library can in most cases provide you with the same resources without
charge.
JRVP Library Recommends
-
Use Google Scholar to supplement your research due to its limitations in
accuracy and timeliness. It is one tool in a wide range of services and
resources that the JRVP Library provides to assist you in your information
seeking.
-
The JRVP Library participates in Google?s library links program. This
means MTU students, faculty, and employees can connect to licensed library
resources through Google Scholar. From campus computers, look for the
HuskyFetch links in Google Scholar search results. These links will help
you locate the full text of the article, the same function as the button
GoFetch.
-
For off-campus users, there are two ways to see the HuskyFetch links in
Google Scholar.
-
First Option: Search for Google Scholar in the E-Resources database section, or
proceed from the off-campus link for Google Scholar in the Search Engines
section. After selecting the Google Scholar link, login to the library?s
authentication server using your ISO username and password. If you take this
step, you won?t need to set any preferences in Google Scholar search results.
-
Second Option: To activate the HuskyFetch links, you?ll need to set Google
Scholar Preferences. Open the page for Scholar Preferences, and then type
Michigan Technological University into the field for Library Links. Select from
the following options, and save your preferences.

-
J. Robert Van Pelt Library (HuskyFetch)
Links you to the HuskyFetch service menu, which provides services for the
full-text lookup, catalog search, ILL service, EndNote connection, and more.
-
Open WorldCat (Library Search)
Links to book search provided by Open
WorldCat, an open access version of WorldCat. Alternatively you
can search the
JRVP Online Catalog by title. If the JRVP library doesn't own the book
you may be able to get it through Interlibrary
Loan.
-
MICHIGAN TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY (Full Text@IngentaConnect)
Provides full-text access to the Ingenta journals which the JRVP library
subscribes to.
-
Google Scholar search results also include links to cited references. More
comprehensive citation searching is available through the Library's
subscription to the
Web of Knowledge.
-
The JRVP Library subscribes to a large number of scholarly online resources, in
addition, these resources provide more targeted or more comprehensive
searching in specific disciplines. Check your citations through the
E-Resources to find the online access. If the JRVP library
doesn't own the article you may be able to get it through
Interlibrary Loan. If you have questions about Google Scholar, or
need assistance with your research, please contact reference/instruction for
more information by sending email to reflib@mtu.edu
or call us at 487-2507.
