2007 - 2008 Annual ReportA Note from the J. R. Van Pelt and Opie Library Interim DirectorFirst, our best wishes to Phyllis H. Johnson on her retirement this year. As University Librarian since 1989, she presided over the construction of the new library building, which continues to enjoy an increase in use, and transformed the library's holdings to support Michigan Tech's vision to be a research university of international stature. This will be a transitional year for the library as we engage in a strategic planning process that will align the library with the university's mission and vision. We have already made a few changes, opening our doors to include the Center for Teaching, Learning and Faculty Development and Educational Technology Services. We have hosted two public events, including the dedication of a grand new artwork, commissioned by the Friends of the Library, which graces the Opie Reading Room. We have also embarked on an economic development collaboration to support entrepreneurship in the region. In the months ahead, we will be looking for new ways to connect to the university community and the public. Stay tuned at www.lib.mtu.edu. Christa Walck
