Events Policy
The J. R. Van Pelt and Opie Library welcomes the use of designated event spaces
in the library for university programming that promotes the mission and vision
of Michigan Tech and is consistent with the mission and vision of the library.
Designated event spaces for public events are on the first floor (Opie Reading
Room and adjacent 24/7 space) and for university activities on the third floor.
Examples of appropriate public events include book signings and University
Scholars' Night; examples of appropriate university activities include graduate
student orientation and faculty development.
The use of these spaces must be approved in advance by the Library Director. The
Director will balance the needs of groups requesting use of the events space
with the needs of library patrons for study space.
Approved events which are not sponsored by the library will be the
responsibility of the organizing group, which will provide its own staff for
the event and make appropriate arrangements with the Memorial Union Building
for catering.
All groups using the space will be expected to adhere to relevant university and
library policies as well as local and federal laws regarding the safe and
lawful use of university facilities.
Requests should be made at least a week in advance to the Director's office at
487-2500. The Library reserves the right to reassign or cancel reservations to
assure the maximum and most appropriate utilization of this space.
Use of 24/7 Space
When the library is closed, the 24/7 space (Reading Room) is designated as
student study space. At the Library Director's discretion, this space may be
used for university programming.
