Course Reserve Policy

  1. What is electronic course reserve? (top)
Electronic course reserve is digital access to instructional materials through the MTU Library on-line catalog, Voyager. Currently reserve services are provided in paper format. As more information is available in electronic format Voyager can provide access to electronic reserves, faculty instructional homepages and WebCT courses. Students can access course materials from their desktop from home, computer labs, or dorm rooms.

  2. What kinds of materials can be placed on electronic course reserve?(top)
    • Course syllabi
    • Lecture notes
    • Past exams
    • Readings
    • Assignments
    • Practice exams
    • Journal articles
    • Book chapters
    • Links to www sites

  3. How does electronic course reserve operate? (top)
Faculty produced materials are provided to reserve staff in electronic format (word processing files, spreadsheets, graphic files, HTML files, etc). Reserve staff convert and link these files in Voyager under instructor name, department, or course number and name. Print materials (articles, book chapters, etc.) are scanned, converted to appropriate format, and linked. Copyright permission may need to be obtained and under certain conditions payment to publishers may be required.

  4. How can I see the material on electronic course reserve? (top)
You must have Adobe Acrobat to access E-Reserves.
    1. Go to the MTU Library website at www.lib.mtu.edu
    2. Click on Voyager MTU Library Catalog.
    3. Click on Course Reserve.
    4. Fill in any of the choices below. Include as much information as possible.
      Instructor: Heuvers Konrad
      Department: Math
      Course: MA2320
      Section: 02    (not required)

    5. Click on Search.
    6. This will bring you to the course you are looking for. You may have several choices here so don't forget to scroll down in order to view all available items.

  5. Print Course Reserves Info (top)
To assure prompt handling of your reserve requests, print and complete the Reserve Form. Turn in the reserve form and materials at the Reserve desk in the Library.

Items are processed in the order received. Reserve material may not be ready for circulation until three working days after the library receives the request. Items are not normally processed over the weekend.

Please limit the number of copies to 1 copy for each 25 students. A maximum of 6 copies will be placed on Reserve. Be sure to indicate the date your materials should be removed from reserve. If you anticipate using your materials for the entire year, all but photocopies may be left on reserve for more than one term.

Please select for Reserve use only those materials which are essential to the work in the class. Because of limited space, we cannot accept extended "suggested reading lists" as Reserve material.

Please bring your items; including library books to the Reserve desk. Include all library call numbers on your processing list to ensure the proper items are placed on Reserve for your course.

Individual photocopies will be placed in binders or folders with other items, not individually. Our experience has shown that one-hour loan periods are usually enough time to circulate your material, since material may be renewed.

  6. Guidelines for Placing Materials on Reserve (top)
By following the accompanying list of suggestions you will make it easier for us to process and maintain your Reserve materials as efficiently as possible.
    1. Bring Reserve materials to the Reserve Desk and complete a Reserve Book List form.
    2. Identify each page of photo-copies (solutions, exams, etc.) with the course number and instructor's name.
    3. Provide the correct number of copies for Reserve. Use the guideline of 1 copy for each 25 students.
    4. It may take three working days to process Reserve materials. Processing is not normally done over weekends!
    5. Be aware of the Copyright Law and its implications for Reserve materials. See Section 13.2 of the MTU Operating Procedures Manual for a summary on Copyright Law.
    6. Call numbers must be located by you. All materials should then be brought to the Reserve desk to be processed.
    7. Material is removed from Reserve in a timely fashion at the end of the semester unless otherwise specified.
    8. All material added to your reserve file for exam week must be brought over to Reserve by the Friday "before" exams.
    9. If you have projects, take home exams, or papers due, and do not have a scheduled exam, you must contact Reserve prior to exam week. This will insure that your material stays on Reserve during the week of exams.
